Certified Translation
“Certified translations” are special types of translation texts, in which the translator signs a statement guaranteeing that the translation is accurate and true. Legal documents, business contracts, immigration documents, court transcripts, adoption agreements, and birth, death, or marriage certificates often require this type of translation.
Certified translations and certified translators are different terms with different meanings. Certified translators are professionals who earn the title by succeeding on an exam and receiving certification from a body like the American Translators Association. However, this type of certification is not required for a translator to provide a certified translation document. An LSP or other qualified translator can certify a translation by attaching a signed certificate of accuracy.
Notarized Translation
Notarizing translations is usually a requirement for official procedures, and it should not necessarily be considered a quality control measure. Governments authorize people called notary publics to oversee and authenticate formalities like translations. Often, translations must be notarized for education documents like foreign diplomas or school transcripts. The notary themselves does not need to speak the language: Anyone who calls themselves a translator can swear an oath to a translation document’s accuracy, sign an affidavit, have it signed by a notary public, and receive a signature and official seal. After this, the document and affidavit are considered valid. There is no certification requirement for the translator, and the notary’s job includes only an identity verification—not a quality assessment.
Apostille
Some clients require an apostille for their foreign-language translation texts. Preparing documents to be used internationally requires this authentication process as well as translation, and it can be time-consuming, tedious, and costly. Apostille requirements depend on the destination country and the purpose of the visit: Some documents requiring this authentication might include adoption papers, birth certificates, powers of attorney, divorce decrees, and marriage certificates. We are fully familiar with this process and can streamline it for you by delivering mirror-image translations of the source text as well as the correct seals, stamps, and apostilles required for acceptance.
